ARRANGETRAM

Another advantage of being a photographer is that you get to witness other traditions, its part of the job as you are contracted to cover them. One of such event I have been privileged to witness over and over is the Arrangetram, known as the coming of age ceremony according to Chennai tradition. It comes from Arrangu +eram which means the rise to the performance space, the debut of the Bharantanatyam dancer when she steps on to the stage for a maiden solo performance

The Arrangetram varies but in America it is becoming a classical, sort of an extravagant coming of age of a society debutante for the Indians living there. It usually starts with the opening ceremony, attended by family and friends, well-wishers, old school and college teachers of the dancer and everyone who’s had a sort of influence over her dance journey and life in general. All feeling satisfied and happy for her, having passed all requirements known as acharya.

On the morning of the ceremony, she and other debut dancers make their debuts with gurus conducting the recital while the young dancers danced according to the rhythm first with slow motions and smiles on their young faces entertaining the guests.

Many institutions offer Arrangetram packages. After being give admission, parents are given tuitions packages and studentstaking up special classes for six months before their performance. Tuition fee varies and it usually from Rs. 3 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs or more.

In all it is one of the most outstanding events I’ve had to cover as a photographer and stills remains one of the many traditions of the Indians.

I offer full photography coverage of this life changing event, just in case you are looking for a photographer who does and it doesn’t matter where in the world it’s happening.

To my non-Indian readers, I hope I have given you enough insight on this beautiful journey of self-discovery for young Indian female dancers?
