WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS FOR BEGINNERS

Although these wedding photography tips are for beginners, I believe they are worth bearing in mind even to a seasoned pro.

Pre-plan the shoot:

Before the actual event, let the couple decide if there are any specific poses they want captured. This might involve creating a shot list so that important family and friend photos are not left out. You might want to visit the venue before the big day as well to get familiar with shot locations and lighting. This is important for beginners to gain confidence.

Gadgets and accessories:

Check your equipment before the wedding to be sure everything is working properly. Carry extra batteries and memory cards, back up your work to avoid disaster. Have an extra camera on hand in case of unexpected events.

Don’t work alone:

Weddings are complex events. While you struggle to capture the big moments, it will be helpful to have another photographer on hand to deal with the smaller moments. You can get another professional to assist you and then return the favour at their next event.

Don’t miss the firsts:

The first kiss, the first dance. These special first times can happen very fast at weddings so you must be attentive. One of the most important duties of the wedding photographer is to capture these moments. You could plan some of these moments ahead with the couple e.g. the first look. Discuss with the couple on any firsts they especially want captured.

Friends and reactions:

While the big moments are happening, your assistant can capture the reactions of friends and family. These unguarded moments will be treasured by the bride and groom. Familiarize yourself with the guests, make them comfortable as you shoot your portraits. Don’t be shy to ask for a pose or to capture a shot.
