In my 32 years of wedding photography, one of the weddings I’ve had the privilege of covering is the Jewish wedding. I have done research and observed their traditions which are as follows:
The bride and groom are obligated to fast on the wedding day and forgive anyone who’s wronged them and it would be broken when they have their first meal together after the wedding ceremony.
Before the ceremony proper starts, the grooms approached his bride for the BEDEKEN also known as veiling. He veils her face which signifies his love for her inner beauty this stems from the bible wherein Jacob was tricked into marrying the sister of the woman he loved because the sister was veiled and it is often said if the man does the veiling himself, he wouldn’t be tricked.
This is an interesting wedding tradition. The Ketubah is the Jewish prenuptial agreement that outlines the responsibilities of the groom to his bride which includes protection and provision, the bride’s rights and guidelines in case of divorce.
This is a part of the Jewish civil law and is signed by the couple in the presence of two witnesses before the main ceremony and is read aloud to their guests during the main ceremony.
Having had the privilege of covering so many Jewish weddings, feel free to contact me for one, I know the ceremony from start to finish and know when to come in as a photographer.
