The Islamic culture spans across various countries and traditions of the world and their weddings are always a delight to cover for me. Muslims weddings are usually dependent on the family traditions of the couple.one of the ways I scale through as a wedding photographer is researching about a couple’swedding culture before the day, helps me understand each wedding I cover and how it affects the couples and their guests, and what I tell wedding attenders generally is, know the tradition and timeline of a wedding o=before you attend. Here are a few things you might see at a Muslim wedding:

The Nikaah:

This is a marriage contract. It is an Islamic marriage ceremony. For instance, if you see this on a wedding timeline, think of it as the actual wedding ceremony. The Nikaah is when the physical marriage contract is signed and it involves the bride and groom, the officiating cleric and parents of the couple or witnesses. During the ceremony, the imam delivers a valuable message to the couple and recites parts of the Quran.

Many Muslim weddings in America mix in elements of traditional western weddings like first looks, first dances and some other traditions, while some Muslim families choose to only hold the traditional ceremonies and adhere strictly to the traditional practices if their home countries.

Mahr also known as Meher:

This is quite similar to a dowry, except that it is a required gift given by the groom given to his bride during a Muslim wedding. Often times, the Mahr is money; some families choose to use other items or symbols such as a ring, precious jewelry or property. The Mahr is often specified in the actual marriage contract signed during the Nikah.

Muslim Wedding locations:

Muslim weddings are usually held at mosques, for some Muslim couples in America, they hold theirs at hotels. If you are a guest attending a wedding at a mosque or masjid, find out and follow any of the rules they may have such as adhering to dress code, separate seats for men and women and any other.
